UTM parameters help analytics tools understand where campaign traffic came from. The technology is simple. The difficult part is keeping the naming consistent enough that the reports stay useful.
What the main UTM fields mean
utm_source identifies the platform or source sending traffic. Examples include google, linkedin, instagram or newsletter.
utm_medium describes the broader channel, such as paid-social, organic-social, email or cpc.
utm_campaign identifies the campaign itself. This should be a stable name that your team can recognise months later.
The optional utm_term and utm_content fields can separate keywords, creatives, placements or variations when you genuinely need that extra detail.
Create one naming convention
The biggest UTM problem is inconsistency. If one person writes instagram, another writes Instagram and another writes insta, analytics may treat those as different values.
Choose one naming convention and keep it lowercase. Use hyphens rather than spaces, and avoid changing the campaign name halfway through a launch.
A simple example could be:
- source: linkedin
- medium: organic-social
- campaign: sely-launch
- content: founder-post
Build the UTM URL before shortening it
The tracking parameters belong on the destination URL. Build and validate that full destination first, then create the short link.
This keeps the public link clean while preserving the campaign context after the redirect. Sely's UTM Builder is designed around exactly this workflow.
If you are also thinking about the visible URL itself, read how to create short links that people trust.
Do not create data you will never use
More parameters do not automatically mean better analytics. Only add fields your team will actually analyse.
For many campaigns, source, medium and campaign are enough. Add content when you are comparing creatives or placements. Add term when keyword-level context is useful.
Review your reports using human traffic
Good attribution can still be misleading if the underlying click totals include automated previews and scanners. Sely keeps known bot activity separate from the primary traffic view.
For more context, see why bot-filtered analytics gives you better click data.
The goal of UTMs is not to create the most detailed URL possible. The goal is to create a repeatable language for campaign traffic. A small, consistent naming system will usually produce cleaner reporting than a complicated one your team cannot maintain.
